Description
Cholla wood is the dried skeleton of the cholla cactus, native to the American Southwest. As the cactus dies and dries, it leaves behind a beautiful, hollow, honeycomb-like structure that’s remarkably versatile across aquariums, terrariums, and reptile enclosures. These are large pieces, 2"+ in diameter and 12" long, sold by the case.
For aquariums (shrimp & fish):
- Natural biofilm factory — the porous surface promotes biofilm, a primary food source for shrimp and fry
- Water conditioning — gently releases beneficial tannins that naturally lower pH and create a soft-water environment
- Ideal hideout — the hollow center and lattice holes give shrimp cover during molting and refuge for small fish
- Plant mounting — an excellent surface for anchoring mosses, Tillandsias, Anubias, or Java Ferns
For terrariums & reptiles:
- Climbing & enrichment — the rough, fibrous texture is easy for reptiles and inverts to grip
- Natural hideaway — hollow sections make ready-made shelters and burrows
- Decorative structure — adds authentic desert character to any habitat
